The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: Captured Confederate Flag on Display

Shawn,

The late Richard Rollins was a good friend and the guy that got me into Civil War Roundtables and CS flags over 23 years ago. He was also a former history professor at Ohio State and a couple other universities so his research skills were quite formidable. I was with him at Gettysburg once when he did the book on the CS flags from there and saw some of the mountains of stuff he pulled out from the files of that park and other sources that he used. I also contributed to that book as did the late Howard Madaus who signed off on it before it went to the printer. He did not just got an "take pictures of flags" - he bought them from the various institutions and spent a good bit of time traveling from California where he lived to Pennsylvania and Virginia among other places for this book.

So I completely reject your comments on the quality of the research in his book. While a couple other flags have turned up from teh campaign since it came out, pretty much everything else in it holds up quite well.
