Well, this a little off topic concerning the 60 army but having carried a sidearm for over 27 years in law enforcement (Border Patrol & local law enforcement), the sidearm is considered a defensive weapon & the vast majority of the use for self defense is 7 yards or less. It was not design as a long range weapon.
That being said, there is always the exception so we had to qualify on the 50 yard line also. But as stated, the 25 yard yard line is about the max distance for a confrontation & still be fairly effective.
That is why, if you had a partner riding with you, he always had a Remington 870 12 ga. shotgun at the ready. That is the most effective weapon when a confrontation occurs.
Hickcock most likely used the point & shoot method which when taught properly, comes natural when you would go into a confrontation & it is just instinct when you draw the sidearm. The ability to try to align your sights when the Adrenalin is rushing, is very difficult & time consuming which you don't have the luxury to have.
Elmer Kieth was a Border Patrol Agent & I had the opportunity to witness his shooting abilities as a young pup at the academy. He was a natural.
There have been known cases where an officer who is a pistolero on the range & got into a shootout & emptied his pistol without hitting his adversary & his partner, who barely qualified on the range, hit the adversary center mass. Adrenalin is a kicker when the rubber hits the road.
Granted, a pistol can be effective at very long ranges & is impressive to see but most likely it has a barrel of 6" or longer, special sights & rounds loaded for long distances.
But, a 51 navy .36 caliber is not a pistol that I would want to try to hit someone at 75 yards. Hickcock finally made the mistake of being trigger happy when he shot his deputy in Hays City KS (if I remember correctly) by accident during a gun fight & that ended his peace officer career.
