I think what he's trying to tell you is that Abner H. Smith in Van Buren County is a different Abner Smith than the one in Jackson County...two different men. The one in Jackson County is the one who served in the 8th, not the Abner Smith in Jackson County. And the "original service record" is not his original service record. It's a compilation of different records done by clerks well, well after the war was over. Whovever acquired the records wrongly assumed that your Abner Smith is the one in the 8th.
