Abner H. Smith, of Van Buren County, did not serve in the 8th Arkansas Infantry. (old) Co. A -- later (new) Co. B -- 8th Arkansas Infantry, was recruited in Jackson County. An 1863 list of families of indigent soldiers in Jackson County lists Abner Smith, serving in the 8th Arkansas, whose wife Milly was receiving a stipend from the county.
