My gggrandfather, Abner H. Smith, was with the 8th. I've been trying to construct a time line with information about him. Part of the time he was with the Pioneer battalion and I'm not sure what that meant. He was wounded at Chickamauga. I don't know if he was in the hospital or not. He was awarded $9.90 for 30days of rations. He was then listed as absent and then absent wounded. I don't know if he ever made it back to Van Buren County. In 1872 his estate was probated, but no specifics were listed in the one court document that was found. Any light or advise that could be shed on him would be greatly appreciated.
