The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Stagecoach Rd, northern Lonoke County

Just and added note, When you say stagecoach road from the time pre-civil war to about 1890. Your not leaving out many roads in Arkansas or any place else. The Chidester, Reeside Stage Co was contracted by the Butterfield Stage line to run the stage mail route from Memphis to Fort Smith. The Chidester, Reeside Stage Co had an office in Atlanta, Arkansas (Atlanta was the early name of Austin, Arkansas). They were always looking for a shorter, faster route from Austin to the Arkansas River area near Conway. This was the reason that Little Rock was by-passed. A little noise was raised and Butterfield made them add the Little Rock Spur. The Little Rock spur actually had two routes from Austin to Little Rock. The Butterfield line also had two routes west from Austin to the (Conway area) and there may have been more. One connected to the Little Rock Spur northwest of Mayflower and the other first went to near the Cadron Settlement (Cadron Ferry).
