Re: Stagecoach Rd, northern Lonoke County

Jerry,
This don't have much to do with the old stagecoach road in your area, however, I can add a few little interesting facts around where you live. I spent some of my childhood (early sixties) growing up on Ed Haymes Rd. but it wasn't called that when I lived there. I don't recall what road it was called or if it had a name. I personally knew Ed Haymes, as he was an elderly gentlemen at the time but very friendly. I can recall his face and also that he was hair-lipped. His large farm was the land on the north side of Cypress Creek and his house was on the west side of the road. According to the Google map it appears to be still there. When you cross the Cypress Creek bridge and look at the creek to the left some 50 yards or so used to be a popular spot for fishing. Families gathered there on the weekend. Good memories. Also, where the cemetary is located just south of the creek stood a one room church, which I was told dated back to the civil war. Don't know if that is true or not. For years before the church disappeared it was not being used and always open, with the pews still there. I'm not sure what happened to the church but it was there in the late 60's. Our house was just south of what shows to be McGonical Lane on the east side of the road. Is that lane name spelled right? because it's awfully close to your last name. The house has been in ruins for years and up to about 3 years ago it was still there. We rented the house and leased many acres there and up over the hill where McGonical Lane leads. Back then McGonical Lane was just a rough trail (tractor size) over the hill to our fields that we plowed and two lakes (I can see one but not the other). The only house I recall in the area was the Haymes Farm, the Trotter house on the southwest corner of what is now Ed Haymes Rd. and Co. Rd. 122 (which was just a one lane dirt road leading to a large peanut field. Of course, back then there were few people in the area and the roads were dirt/gravel but in good condition. As far as I can tell the road is the same as it has always been leading out of Austin with the exception of the interstate and various small roads leading to subdivisions that did not exist back then. This is the first I've heard about it being a stagecoach road, which I find very interesting and I'm going to be checking into it more.
