More on AHC
In Response To: Ark. History Commission ()

Just got this from one of the commissioners...

All we asked for was increased rent, as other state offices vacated the Big Mac building, we were finally able to expand some of our priceless collections out of the 'Bat Cage' literally, and basement. In 1978, when the Big MAC building was erected, AHC was to have the entire 2nd floor, but it was continually squeezed out of space, until we were destitute for space.

Today, in talking with Republican freshman, it was learned a group was making a point of no cost of living increases, and that we did have that in our budget, as I am sure they all do.

As other agencies, the state owns the building, the state rents it to AHC, AHC pays rent to the state, and the following year those funds are available to be reappropriated. The 14 years that I have been on the Commission, this has been a matter of discussion, and according to Richard Davies, and my way of thinking, it is a results in a zero balance.

This year there are 47 freshmen in the house. According to Rep. Jeremy Gilliam, [he is outstanding young man] at first vote there was a lot of confusion and they were not going to vote for something they did not understand. The second vote, one of them had gone to the AHC and took a tour, he explained fromm the 'well' to the others, and it made some difference but not enough.

From what I have heard, the Republicans have determined to curtail all cost of living raises, and reduce government spending. When I suggested that it might be better received if an 'across the board' suspension, rather than singling out one or two agencies, the response was, yes, but we haven't figured that out yet.

Davies feels that the AHC budget was up early, and that is why we were singled out.

Monday, another vote will be cast. Some representative are going over to AHC to take a tour in order to better evaluate their vote. That is very commendable!

My experience in talking with Representatives today, was very pleasing, and they went above the call of duty in desiring information and imparting information, I felt.

Your support is most sincerely appreciated.
