It is likely that your great grandfather served in a Tennessee unit. There is a Joseph Ray (Wray) in the Moses and Susan Ray household in both the 1850 and 1860 McNairy County, TN, census records.
The Soldiers and Sailors System lists two soldiers with the name of J.C Ray. No soldiers are listed as J.C. or Joseph C. Wray.
The first soldier was a private in Company I, 154 Senior Infantry Regiment. I do not know the counties from which this regiment originated, but the Colonel was Marcus Wright of McNairy County.
The second soldier was a private in Company A, 18th Tennessee Cavalry (Newsom’s). According to Krutes, this regiment originated from the counties of McNairy, Hardeman, Henderson, and Madison
Joseph C. appears in the 1910 Hardeman County, TN, census (Hardeman is next to McNairy). Nancy C. (wife) and Lottie C. (daughter) also appear in this record. We learn from this census that Nancy was Joseph’s second wife. It was Nancy’s first marriage, and she was the mother of nine children, eight living at the time of enumeration.
Lottie appears in subsequent records in Pinellas County, Florida, where she passed away in August 1869. She and husband Earl are both buried in the Royal Palm South Cemetery (Find-A-Grave). Her brother, Jordan (listed in the 1910 census), was also residing in Pinellas County.
I lived in Jonesboro for many years, and it is, as Dick said, very flat. The Jonesboro part is very confusing.
