Jim MartinKirkpatrick's Kentucky Cav. BattalionTue Feb 20 09:45:15 2001Hayes,I am familiar with Capt. John Kirkpatrick's Cavalry Battalion, which was originally two companies of the 9th Tennessee Cavalry (Bennett/Ward). These were the two companies that escaped the surrender of John Hunt Morgan's forces at Buffington Island, OH and ultimately made their way back to East Tennessee. They appear to have been no more than 150 to 200 men at the time of their escape, but were augmented to a force of 450 prior to Chickamauga. I have no information as to the source of these additional men. There is an excellent diary or journal online for these men at:THE WARTIME DIARY OF JOHN WEATHEREDI don't know if this provides any additional information, but this gentleman from the 3rd Georgia Infantry was discharge and reenlisted as a private in Kirkpatrick's Battalion Kentucky Cavalry.Adams, Benjamin B. -- Private - April 26, 1861.
