There's at least three men named William M. Brooks.
1) Co. "I", 3rd Ala. Reserves. enlisted July 25, 1864, age 47 from Perry County. Detailed as carpenter, working for a Selma hospital, Dec. 1864; paroled at Demolis in June 1865.

2) Goldsby's Local Defense Co. 1st Sgt. enlisted July (1863) at Selma, exempt by reason of a substitute, age 32. Goldsby may have raised a senior reserve unit which served in the Department of the Gulf in 1864-65. Capt. G. has two letters on file written in January 1864 after the law allowing substitutes was repealed. FYI: he describes the "county reserves" as young men ages 16-17 and older men ages 45-60; the state militia was composed of men from age 18 to 45 noty liable to Confederate service.

3) 1st Lt. & Ordnance officer. This man served briefly with Wilson's Georgia Brigade in the Army of Tennessee. It appears that he belonged to a company assigned to duty in Atlanta. He couldn't have been either of the two named above, and probably not the 2nd Lieut. who served with Morgan'z command, 9th Tennessee Cav.
