The various William M. Weavers
Wed Feb 21 11:20:31 2001

I had suspected that the Private William Weaver of the 3rd Reserves was a man that I had found records of in Perry County. One possibility down.

As to 1st Sgt. William M. Weaver in Goldsby's company, my William Minter Weaver was born 4/2/1829. In July 1863, he was 34 years old. The man in Goldsby's was listed as 32. Pretty good proof that they were not the same man. However, I've have seen the muster roll ages off by one or two years so often that I can't say that it is conclusive evidence.

Where did you find the info that identified the Ordance Officer W.M. Weaver as from the Georgia unit? I didn't find that in his service record. I find only three possible matches to this in Broadfoot's: William Weaver, 2nd Ga. Inf.; William Weaver, 2nd Ga. Reserver Inf.; and Capt. W. Morgan Weaver, 66th Ga. Inf. I don't know enough about Ga. units to know if any of these were under Wilson's Ga. Brigade.

What gives me pause is that his compiled service card references "Barbieries Cav. Batn., Goldsby's Company; Kirkpatrick's Ky. Cav. Batn.; 37th Ala. Inf.; and Staff". The compiler *must* have had some reason to believe that these were all the same person. He certainly didn't just group together all possible persons with these names/initials, as there are plenty more possible persons with these names and/or initials in Confederate service. I sure would like to see the Kentucky film on Kirkpatrick's Battalion to see if there is something there that ties them all together (or led the compiler to think that it did).
