William Tell Sanders of Mooresville later (march 12, 1862) raised a company called the "Mollie Walton Guards". I wonder if he had attempted to raise another company, the Sanders Rebels, in 1861, or if someone named their company for him. I don't recognize the name "Higgins" as an Alabama officer from the Tennessee Valley, but that's just what I can recall at the moment.

Malone's "Limestone Rebels" are more familiar. Look over the organization chart below and let me know if the company organization charts make sense:

On October 29, 1861, the 2nd Alabama Infantry Battalion organized with five companies at Camp Jordan near Huntsville, Alabama. Two more companies joined within a short time. The Independent Battalion (as some styled it) also reported as Chadicks 1st or Daviss 5th Alabama Infantry Battalion.

The battalion served near Corinth, Mississippi, during most of its brief career. On April 2, 1862, this command united with three companies of Golladays Alabama Infantry Battalion to become the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment, then known as the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Nicholas D. Richardson. Appointed Surgeon on October 29, 1861; formerly 1st Lieutenant of Company G. Later served with the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
William Toxey. Appointed Assistant Surgeon December 27, 1861. Later served with the 25th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
Van B. Gilbert. Appointed acting Assistant Surgeon as 1st Lieutenant of Company C on December 23, 1861. Later served with the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

A. R. Wiggs. Appointed Captain and Assistant Commissary (A.C.S.) October 29, 1861; formerly a sergeant of Company D, 7th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

George W. McKinney. Appointed Captain and Assistant Quartermaster (A.Q.M.) October 29, 1861; formerly 1st Sergeant of Company G. Also served as acting Assistant Commissary (A.A.C.S.). Later Captain and A.Q.M. of the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

William E. Hill. Appointed 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant October 29, 1861; formerly Adjutant of the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Relieved; assigned to Company F of the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment [April 2,] 1862.

William C. Gardner. Appointed Chaplain October 29, 1861; formerly a member of Company E.

Companies and their Captains

Company A of Calhoun County Calhoun Beauregards

James A. T. Sappington. Later served as Captain of Company A, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Organized at Middleton, Alabama, July 25, 1861, this company was accepted in Confederate service on August 10, 1861. Members enlisted for three years or the war at Huntsville, Alabama, September 23, 1861. They later became Company A of the 50th Alabama Infantry Reg Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Haney’s company organized at Florence, Alabama, August 14, 1861. Mustering for three years or the war September 27, 1861, members enrolled October 4, 1861, at Camp Jordan near Huntsville, Alabama. Initially known as Company “D”, they later served as Company “H”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Company “C” of Limestone County

Thomas H. Gilbert. Later served as Captain of Company “B”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Accepted in service at Gilbertsboro, Alabama, September 3, 1861, members mustered for three years or the war October 4, 1861, at Camp Jordan near Huntsville, Alabama. They later became Company “B” of the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Company “D” of Tuscaloosa County “Tuscaloosa Mountaineers”

Newton Nash Clements. Later served as Captain of Company “F”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment. [DAB3:350]

This company enrolled in Confederate service for twelve months at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, August 31, 1861. Officers and men mustered at Columbus, Mississippi, October 7, 1861. They later served as Company “F” of the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Company “E” of Blount County “Blount Rebels”

George Weeden Arnold. Later served as Captain of Company “D”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment. [DAB3:56]

Accepted in Confederate service at Summit, Alabama, October 15, 1861, members enrolled for three years or the war at Camp Bradford, Huntsville, Alabama, November 9, 1861. They later served as Company “D”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Company “F” of Jackson County “Paint Rock Rifles”

Lemuel G. Mead. Later served as Captain of Company “C”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment. [DAB4:1181]

Officers and men enlisted for twelve months service September 10, 1861, and departed Paint Rock, Alabama, September 17, 1861. Arriving at Iuka, Mississippi, September 20, 1861, they mustered September 30, 1861. Members later formed Company “C” of the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Company “G” of Limestone County “Limestone Rebels”

James Henry Malone. Later served as Captain of Company “E”, 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Accepted in Confederate service at Athens, Alabama, September 17, 1861, members mustered for three years or the war near Huntsville, Alabama, September 26, 1861. Officers and men initially formed Company “B” of this battalion, but gave up that designation after mustering again on November 19, 1861. They later became Company “E” of the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
