Thanks for the reply. I assume the elder Robert Seay was the one who served in the LAA. Another researcher has responded that he was killed at Malvern Hill July 1, 1862. That supports info in the family Bible referred to in my original post. Rosters and official records are very much lacking in this case but the several fragmentary references to his service all point in this direction.

I also assume that the Robert Seay who enlisted in the Lynchburg Public Guard was his son. It would, however, seem more likely that a person of his age would have joined a front line unit instead of the home guards - assuming that this was truly a home guard unit and not just bearing a name that might imply such.

Do you know where I might find rosters, etc. on the CS Navy?
