Captain Frank H Foote of Port Gibson, Mississippi
Captain Frank H Foote was one of the Messengers when Fort Gregg was buillding up. He was on horseback and had left the Fort before the fight.
After the Surrender he returned to Port Gibson, Mississippi.
In the 1880's, Mr. Foote served as United States Post Master in Port Gibson, Mississippi.
Mr. Foote vowed to record the name and a few comments about every man from Claiborne County, Mississipppi, that "Wore the Gray." And no, he did not get them all, but I think you will admit that he got a lot of them. I got much of my Fort Gregg information from his information.
in the 1890s, Mr. Foote's wife died. By this time, the Vicksburg National Military Park was organized (1899 I think.) he made his home with his daughter and her family and worked as a volunteer in getting the Vicksburg National Military Park up and going. One finds his name mentioned often in the records. His little book of notes, ended up in the Chancery Clerk's office in Port Gibson, Missisisppi, where it remains today. I discovered it many years past, became so excited, that I had it published.
It is today available at the Port Gibson Chamber of Commerce office for a nominal fee.
Just enough to cover printing and postage.
And yes, Mr. Foote made a few errors, but not many.
For instance, he said that Captain A K Jones of Port Gibson was in command at Fort Gregg,
This was in error, Captain Jones was in command of the 12th Regiment of Missisisppi Volunteers.
I understand this Regiment at this time,. April 2nd, 1865, had been reduced to approx 75 miles.
