Re: Captian John T Perrin Company E 26th Virginia

Most likely occurred on the Bermuda Hundred lines... Just North of Petersburg. There was a heavy skirmish fight that occurred there on May 20th 1864 near Clays Farm in Chesterfield County Va.... The purpose was to push back the existing Federal skirmish/picket lines so the Confederate forces could realign their own lines on more favorable terrain... After the Battle of Drewrys Bluff on May 16th, Gen Butler retreated back closer to his base of operations in a large bend of the river. Confederates quickly cut him off from any further advances at the time and entrenched across his front in what became known as "Into the Bottle"..... Gen Grants comment regarding Butlers action and being isolated and secured in his position.. Grant reportedly proclaimed that Butler was trapped in a bottle securely corked.... This was just prior to the arrival of forces under both Lee and Grant which set the stage for Petersburg contest shortly to come. The May 20th engagement didn't earn or was designated a particular namesake for the action.... It was a bit costly, but they succeeded in pushing the Federals back and gained better defensive ground.
