Re: The 1861 GH&H Depot in Galveston

I have just visited the site of the only railroad depot in Galveston at the start of and during the Civil War. As noted in my prior post, it was the initial depot for the Galveston, Houston and Henderson (GH&H) railroad company. The depot was located on the west side of the intersection of 33rd Street with the start of Avenue D (now Market Street), or a few blocks southwest of the Railroad Museum (the early 20-th Century Santa Fe/Union Station) located on the west end of The Strand @ 25th Street and Avenue B. An existing building, which was the GH&H-IGN-MKT-MP freight depot (office building) at the original depot site, was built in 1904. It's attached western loading dock/warehouse probably covers the site of the original GH&H depot of 1861. I hope to post a few pictures of this initial GH&H site taken during my trip to Galveston in civilwaralbum.com at some future date.

I wish to note an outstanding journal article written in 1964 by Dr. Vera Lea Dugas (PhD from UT) on the early development of railroads in Galveston and Houston for your information. It is easy reading, but most insightful. Warning, if you like railroad history of Texas, you won't be able to stop reading this article until you have read it all, perhaps twice.
