Donald S Frazier, in his book Cottonclads!, ... , shows the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad extending northeast along D Street near downtown Galveston during the Battle of Galveston, 1-1-63. I understand that extensions were made to the 1861 railhead near the depot to haul heavy guns and artillery supplies out to two new large coastal batteries built (in 1862?) to the east and south of "downtown" Galveston.
My question is, "Where was the 1861 (pre-war) railroad depot located in Galveston?"
The depot is frequently referred to in literature that I have read recently, but I can't seem to reliably locate the depot's position. It certainly wasn't located on the west end of the Strand, as the old railroad museum/depot might suggest to a casual visitor of today.
Any help on locating the old depot would be appreciated.
