Capt. John Minor = Capt. "Mentor"????

Hi George and Joe -

Egads!!!!! You may have helped me to finally solve the longtime puzzle of the CSA unit that my ggg-uncle, Riley Marion Byrd may have belonged to...!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?

I need to confirm things, but the Andrew J./J. A. Gardner who was a Private in Captain John Minor's Company C, Napier's Tennessee Cavalry and enlisted December 7, 1862 at Waverly by Colonel J. W. Johnson may have been the neighbor and possible in-law of Riley Marion Byrd -- Riley's first wife was named Rebecca Gardner....(!!!!).

Riley Marion Byrd's granddaughter Cleo Cherry Grogan was ADAMANT that her grandpa belonged to a CSA unit, and also claimed that her Uncle Joseph Mentor Byrd ("Uncle Mentor" pronounced "Minter") was "named after grandpa Riley's commanding officer". Is it possible that "Mentor" might be the documented Captain John Minor??????

Also, Andrew J./J.A. Gardner served in Taylor's Co. B, 1st Tenn. Artillery and was in the same unit with Riley Marion Byrd's older brother, George Wesley Byrd (see: http://11arkansas.com/yank/geo_byrd.htm ).

According to Cleo, her grandpa Riley lived in Henry County TN after the war and did not come back to Stewart Co. TN for sometime after the war - hard feelings from some of his neighbors there Between the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers because of his service in a Confederate partisan unit perhaps?????

Now.....I need to determine if Riley Marion Byrd's first wife, Rebecca Gardner, had a brother/close relative named Andrew J. Gardner.....

This is MOST spiffy.....!!!!!

thanks,

Kenneth Byrd
