Re: Capt. John Minor = Capt. "Mentor"????

Ken, I tried to send you an e-mail. Rebecca Gardner, who married Mr. Byrd, was the eldest daughter of John Gardner. He was the older brother to A. J. (Jack) Gardner. I believe that in all likelihood, Jack Gardner and Robert (Bob) Buchanan served in a partisan unit together. Bob returned to Dover and was forced to sign the Oath in Feb. 1863, following the second Battle of Dover. Jack last appeared on the muster rolls of the 10th TN Cavalry following this battle and listed as "absent...possibly sick". Here is the only alternative: Jack signed the Oath in March 1862 at the POW camp in Alton, IL, then came home and enlisted in Napiers Battn. of partisans hence the 10th TN Cavalry (risking summary execution if captured) and then quit the war after his home outside Dover was burned down in Feb. 1863. And Bob deserted the 50th TN Inf. to come home and live behind enemy lines with no property.....and married Jack's oldest daughter, Mary Ann Gardner.
