Re: Attn George--- 10th Tn. Cavalry CSA

I would question if these two are the same.

Andrew J. Gardner enlisted as a Private in Captain Jesse Taylor's Company (B), 1st Regiment Tennessee Artillery* November 28, 1861 at Fort Henry by Lt. Stankiewicz for one year, captured February 7, 1862 at Fort Henry, sent to military prison at Alton, Illinois arriving February 17, 1862, "discharged" March 20, 1862, recorded on the September 30, 1862 company muster roll as "Took the oath at Alton, Ill."

* This organization was successively designated as Captain Taylor's Company Tennessee Artillery; Captain Stankiewicz's Company Tennessee Artillery; and as Captain Weller's Company Tennessee Light Artillery. It served as Company B, 1st Regiment Tennessee Artillery, and as Company B, 1st Battalion Tennessee Light Artillery. About January, 1864, the latter organization was broken up and remnants of it went into the 1st Regiment Heavy Artillery.

J. A. Gardner, Private, Captain John Minor's Company C, Napier's Tennessee Cavalry**, enlisted December 7, 1862 at Waverly by Colonel J. W. Johnson for 3 years, no further records

** This company subsequently became Company B, Napier's Battalion Tennessee Cavalry.
This battalion was organized in December, 1862, with five companies, A to E. It was consolidated with Cox's Battalion Tennessee Cavalry about February 25, 1863, to form the 10th (DeMoss') Regiment Tennessee Cavalry, this company becoming Company E of that regiment.

J. A. Gardner, Private, Company E, 10th Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted December 7, 1862 at Waverley, Tennessee by Colonel Johnson for the war, recorded as sick at Spring Hill on the muster roll dated July 22, 1863 at Rossville, Georgia, no further records [Note: this was the last muster roll surviving, thus, we do not know if he ever reported back to the regiment]

10th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (DeMoss')

10th Cavalry Regiment was organized in February, 1863, by consolidating Cox's and Napier's Tennessee Cavalry Battalions. Its companies were raised in the counties of Perry, Humphreys, Decatur, Hickman, Davidson, Montgomery, and Henry. The unit served in Forrest's, Humes', J.B. Bifle's, and Dibrell's Brigade. It fought at Brentwood, Denmark, and Chickamauga, then saw action in the Atlanta Campaign and Hood's operations in Tennessee. During February, 1865, it was consolidated with the 11th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment and in May contained 30 officers and 280 men. The unit ended the war in Alabama and surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. Its field officers were Colonels Nicholas N. Cox and William E. De Moss, Lieutenant Colonel Edward B. Trezevant, and Major John Minor.
