I can't thank you enough for taking the time to share this!!! My objective at this point is to include a bit of factual history in my simple writings about our ancestors - a small legacy for our children and grandchildren. And, it's kind, caring folks like you who are helping me do just that.

Some of us don't have the time to visit libraries nor the money to buy all the books we'd like to read. So, the internet is a big help to me - in particular this website and people like you! (The Civil War is the most popular topic with my children and two grandsons in our family history so far.)

From this letter you posted, it seems like Uncle Joe was likely captured during the retreat - hardly making it out of the trenches.
