Re: Natural-Born Research Killers

Shelbyville is the old name for Pelham AL.
You're talking about Shelby Springs AL, between Columbiana and Calera. The 28th Alabama Regiment organized at Camp Winn, Shelby Springs AL, where the 1st Mississippi Hospital relocated after the capture of Jackson MS --

To answer your question and many others (and pardon me if I've mentioned this before), you'll need to review records of regiments other than your target command. For instance ADAH has a journal kept by Lt. Isaac W. McAdory which should answer your question about events of July 3, 1864. You will also find other sources for the 24th and especially the 34th Alabama which will provide further detail.

Most people focus intently on one regiment and thereby miss much good and helpful information found in sources on companion commands. That's one of two HUGE mistakes made by most amateur historians. The other is assuming that everything available will be somewhere on the internet. The internet is only a starting point -- the tip of the iceburg!

I don't know which mistake is worse -- either one will kill a research project dead.

I'll now sound like a broken record -- your easiest and best source will be General Manigault himself. He directed, observed and recorded daily operations of this brigade from the summer of 1862 until November 1864. Writing exclusively for his children and grandchildren, Manigault never expected the public to see his journal. That makes this account even more interesting.

Working without Manigault is like trying to find something in your kitchen without turning on the kitchen light. You kinda sorta know where things are, and may be able to find what you want, but ....
