You are SO right about the '4' Ashcrafts being the same person. I have his compiled service records and somewhere down the line a copyist or someone caught the error, and made a mark (such as we would use an asterisk) on the cards that have the names "Jas. or James, etc" with a note saying...

" *appears in column of names as Joseph J. Ashcraft"

But, Joseph's service records are indexed as "James G." I almost didn't order them because of that, but I sure am glad I did.

I'm glad the duplicates are listed on this roster, however, because Joseph J(oel) Ashcraft had a brother and a first cousin with the same 1st name and middle initial serving in the same company in AR, and their two service record files were combined into one because 'duplicates' were not included.
