Re: The CBF Is A Honored Symbol

Dennis, for the most part, educators are not to blame. There are so many hours in a day. Parents and Grandparents have to be the glue that will keep history from falling apart. Common Core is the real enemy. I have to confess that when I sub in a classroom I get the assigned work done and over with early. Then I find where they are in their 'History' books (and in this case, 'History' is a very loose term) and I usually end up talking about things that are not in the lessons in the book or righting the wrong information. The biggest misinformation subject is the reasons for the Civil War.

To their credit, most of the teachers I work with are like minded and we do try to add 'facts' that are missing. I also sub at just one school and we have some the top parents and students in the county. Many of our students are military and some are the kids of the pilots and crews for the Blue Angels. We don't have the behavior problems most other schools have.

The frustration we feel is very real when the lessons in the 2nd grade 'Social Studies' book are on Civil Rights and Cesar Chavez. Why do 7 year olds need to know about the migrant farm workers union war? Parents and Grandparents. We really do need you!!!
