Re: The CBF Is A Honored Symbol

Joe, are you saying that the CBF should have been removed from statehouse grounds sooner? If so, I agree with you. The monuments do not seem to have had flags on them until the flags were moved from capitol domes to them after having been placed on the domes and in state flags in defiance of integration and the civil rights movement. I am opposed to the removal of monuments to the Confederacy. They are historical in their own right and are part of the story of remembrance and reconciliation following the war. Additional interpretive signage may be in order, but the monuments should remain. As for the flag on statehouse grounds, a statehouse and state flag are supposed to represent all the people of the state. The CBF, whether from its creation or because of being co-opted by racists, is a divisive symbol and has no business being on statehouse grounds. As for museums and historic sites, the CBF's presence is completely appropriate as a matter of history. As for the removal of items with the CBF from retailers, that is a business decision, not a government mandate; if enough consumers demand its return, it will return. For example, Apple pulled the Ultimate General: Gettysburg app from their app store for about 48 hours before cooler heads prevailed. Private citizens of course are free to express themselves in any legal way they see fit.
