New England got its initial wealth from the Slave Trade. Brown University was named for one of the biggest slave traders in American history. Like in Great Britain, New England's initial abolitionist movement came about from the effects of the Slave Trade on its sailors. A slave sailors life was horrible and was not much better than the slaves they transported. The movement came from the anti-slave trade movement fighting against the conditions in which these sailors were forced to live.
