William C. and Pleasant M. Mobley both enlisted as privates on July 30, 1862, by Capt. D.J. Jernigan, in Co., K, Ballentine's Regt. of Cavalry (this unit went by that name in the field, but was carried on War Department records in Richmond as 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Partisan Rangers.) On the first card in each man's CMSR, the enlistment place is shown as Panola. I presume this to mean the county, unless someone knows of a town or post office by that name which may have existed at that time. All subsequent cards in their records show the place of enlistment as Cold Water Dpt. I believe that this is Coldwater Depot. At that time, the town of Coldwater was in DeSoto County, and the railroad depot was in the center of the town. After the war it became a part of the newly formed Tate County. On Aug. 28, 1862, both of these men (along with many, if not all, of the company) were transferred to Company H. On that date, William C. Mobely was elected 2nd Lieut. and Pleasant M. Mobley was elected Brevet 2nd Lieut. of Co. H. William was eventually promoted to 1st Lieut. and Pleasant to 2nd Lieut. On March 5, 1865, both men wrote letters requesting that they be allowed to resign their commissions and return to the ranks in another regiment. This is about the time that the regiment was disbanded. I have not examined the records of the other officers of the regiment, or the regimental returns, but these letters could be a part of an orderly transition, or could be a part of a mass resignation that led to the dissolution of the regiment. Anybody know for sure?
