Re: Burial of the dead from the 1st battle of Fran

George, your help is greatly appreciated. Two further inquires, if I may: Ref. Charles Robert Hemphill -- any chance he re-enlisted and was KIA at Franklin? How might we check this, as someone is in grave #105 and date of death, age and family records dating back to the 19th century seem to match.

And with your resources, can you verify that J. W. Hemphill was indeed the Reg. Surgeon for the 34th? It looks like, from the document from the Dept. of Archives, that JWH, in July '64, re-verified his brother's disability at AJH's home in French Camp. Seems I remember from somewhere in our family files that A. J. Hemphill was sent home from a camp near Abbeville, which I think is near Oxford. The family was indeed from French Camp.

Thanks in advance for you help. You are so much more able to search the various data bases than I.

PS: I hope I don't wear out my welcome but you mentioned a 2nd C. R. Hemphill in the Choctaw Guards, which implies Choctaw County and that he was enlisted in Jackson-Brookhaven, which is some distance from Choctaw Co. However, half way between Jackson & Brookhaven is Copiah County where in later years Hemphill's, Hughston's and Rea's all lived. Perhaps my Hemphill family was south of Jackson long before I realized. I've got some research to do! There were indeed two Hemphill brothers (Charles and Phillip) who came from Georgia to Mississippi in the 1830-40 time frame.

And again THANKS!
