“I certify that I have carefully examined the said 3rd Lt. A. J. Hemphill of the 31st Regt. Miss. Vols. and find him incapable of performing the during of his office, as such, because of general debility & prostration, caused by Chronic Hepatitis & dispepie [?] causing continued and exhausting diarrhorea; also bronchial irritation producing general irritation of the vopiratory [?] organs attended with cough. It is my opinion that he will not be able to perform military duty during the term of his enlistment & therefore, I recommend that his resignation be accepted.”
