James M. Hunt is shown as a physician on both the 1870 and 1880 census of Vicksburg. A James M Hunt was appointed from Mississippi, on Sept. 1, 1861, as an assistant surgeon to report to Gen. Joseph E Johnston. He was subsequently assigned as Assistant Surgeon of the 23 Alabama Infantry (surgeons were not necessarily appointed to units from their home state). He later signs papers as the Senior Surgeon of Tracy's Brigade (of which the 23rd Ala. was a part). In Sep. '63 he signs as the post surgeon at Clinton, MS, but by Nov. '64, he tenders his resignation, signing this time as surgeon of the 23rd Alabama. Said resignation was accepted in Jan. '65.
