Re: Co. "A", 33rd Miss. Regt., "Cumberland Guards"

Mike --

Since Oxford is an unusual family name, this line is easy to follow. The Oxfords came from Tennessee, which had been Chickasaw land. However, according to the Mississippi census of 1850 and 1860, all Oxfords reported are white. Had they been Indian or "mixed blood", as people said in 1860, the Oxfords would have been reported differently, as per census instructions.

In 1850, William G. Oxford and family lived in Attala County MS, but by 1860 this household have removed to Neoshoba County. John M. Oxford enlisted in Co. "A", 33rd Miss. Regt., and served honorably through that commands campaigns and battles. He was wounded and captured at Peachtree Creek GA, July 20, 1864, lost his right leg and died in a Federal hospital in Chattanooga TN, Aug. 18, 1864. His age in 1864 is listed as twenty. William E. Oxford, a younger brother, enrolled in Co. "A", Perrin's 11th Mississippi Cavalry. The last record filed shows him wounded in a Macon GA hospital. It appears that a pension application was submitted in his name from the State of Texas.

In 1850 James M. Oxford lived in Winston County MS. Family researchers give his place of birth as Giles County TN, Mar. 25, 1816. On Apr. 11, 1856, he married Elizabeth Miller in Winston County, and moved to Pickens County AL. When the war came, he tried to enlist in Co. "C", 41st Alabama Regt., but was rejected by the surgeon. After passage of the act of Feb. 17, 1864, being age 47, he enrolled in Co. "I", 3rd Alabama Senior Reserves.

Also in 1850 Allen and Austin Oxford lived with Wesley Oxford in western Chickasaw County MS. By 1860 Allen was living in the household of James M. Oxford in Pickens County AL. Allen C. Austin enrolled in the "McCaa Rangers" of Pickens County, which eventually became Co. "D", 8th Confederate Cavalry. Evidently Austin G. Oxford moved to Louisiana before the war and enrolled in Co. "C", 28th Louisiana Regt. He was living in Jackson LA in 1900. Don't know what became of Wesley.
