Re: Quartermaster requisitions, Wood's Confed. Cav

Alan, I got most/all of my info on this issue from CMSRs of Company commanding officers. In fact, of the six files I have on company commanders in Adams/Wood's Cavalry, five have "Special Requisitions" dated 9 June 1863 at Mechanicburg, Miss. (the twelve houses of which had been burned by the Federals a few days before).

Ordnance requesitions in this admittedly limited group of record files are spotty, but at least give some idea of what weapons must have been carried. I have estimated the number of men in each company by the number of horses and mules reported on the requesitions for forage and grain.

It appears, as you say, that uniform items were requested with a certain number in need. For example, one company got 100 shirts and 58 pair of pants, along with 37 jackets and a dozen pairs of shoes (and a like number of drawers). A few months before, feed for 57 horses was required. And the numbers of items for all the companies in my sample are all different, and proportions vary from company to company.

It's not my purpose to plumb the depths of the Confederate Quartermaster system, but the extent of this clothing issue caught my attention.
