Re: Other opponents of the 13th Mississippi

I should have mentioned that when the 13th Mississippi began their charge upon the Third Corps line at the Emmitsburg road, their objective point was held by six guns of Battery E, 1st Rhode Island. However, this battery did little harm because they spent the time limbering up to move out, since the 13th and the rest of Barksdale's brigade could cover the intervening distance in about seven minutes. The battery was screened by the 114th Pennsylvania, which moved forward in front of the guns. However, the 114th did not stay very long either. Perhaps they fired off one apparently ineffective volley and then moved up the Emmitsburg road to the north. That left the 73rd New York as mentioned in my previous note. A couple of things to note about Union General Sickles' line. First, artillery batteries were generally integrated into the line, so when they pulled out a gap existed that was hard to fill on short notice. Second, the Union regiments were smaller and represented different brigades deployed in piecemeal fashion, while the regiments of Barksdale's brigade were considerably larger on average and the brigade formed a cohesive fighting force under Barksdale's strong personal leadership. Those are some reasons why the Mississippians smashed the Union Third Corps line wide open from the Peach Orchard to the Sherfy farmhouse, and were able to reach the Plum Run depression more than half-way to Cemetery Ridge with sufficient strength and forward motion to keep the Federals off balance and reeling. It may have been, as one writer put it, the grandest charge of the war. Certainly it was one of the most impressive.
