Re: Isaac H. Allen, 13th Mississippi

Jim,
The wounded of Barksdale's brigade were generally taken back to John S. Crawford's farm located on the east bank of Marsh Creek, about 1 3/4 miles due west of the Peach Orchard. In his post-war damage claim, Crawford writes, (My) "farm on Marsh Creek, Rebels occupied and encamped thereon, establishing a large hospital occupying the house, barn, shed, and outbuildings, and the adjacent grounds. The hospital had tents and buildings, and used the dining room as an amputation room. There were hundreds of wounded, and it was in use for five to six weeks. ... A part of the U.S. 6th Corps marched over the farm after the battle in pursuit of the enemy." Another "D" company private, Joseph P. Andrews, had his right leg amputated at Crawford's farm and died on 16 July. I can account for only 15 enlisted members of the company who served at Gettysburg; most of these were wounded. The average for a company in the 13th was 48 officers and men present for that battle. I have not been able to identify the "D" company commander, presumably a Captain. Third Lieutenant William Calhoun Godwin was possibly present. Incidentally, of 63 casualties in the brigade whose wounds were identified by type, 61 (96.8%) were caused by gunshot (minie ball). The remaining two were caused by artillery (a grapeshot and a spent solid shot). The reason for the low artillery percentage was that Barksdale's brigade was so close to the Union lines at the Emmitsburg Road that the Union artillery had to withdraw immediately and had no time to be effective.
