Carleton's Company (Newton Rifles) 13th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers* May 17, 1861 at Cornith, Mississippi, for a period of one year by Captain Carleton, advanced to 2nd Corporal, n. d., relieved from Corporalship [sic] April 26,1862**, admitted C. S. A. General Hospital, Danville, Va. July 2, 1862 with gun shot wound, returned to duty September 9, on furlough of indulgence from February 1, 1863, wounded and left at Gettysburg, Pa. July 2, 1863, captured July 3 and admitted to the Letterman General Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa., fracture M. 3d right thigh, sent to Gen. Hospital, Baltimore November 3, paroled at Hammond U. S. General Hospital, Point Lookout, Md., and transferred for exchange March 17,1864, furloughed from Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, Va. for 60 days on March 25, 1864 having been admitted 5 days earlier, gunshot wound right hip***, recorded on the March/April, 1864 as "At home in Miss. on furlough," retired to the Invalid Corps., P. A. C. S. at Meridian, Miss., November 24, 1864, recorded on a list of those surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama May 4, 1865, and paroled at Meridian, Miss., May 12, 1865
* This company was successively designated as Captain Carleton's Company, Mississippi Volunteers, and as Captain Carleton's Company, (Old) Company E, and (New) Company D, 13th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.
