Secondly, I received an oral history written several years by the daughter of William Sanford Fuller...this might help. It goes as follows:
Now for Papa's (papa here refers to William Sanford Fuller - son of William Fuller) history, which is a very sad one. He was born on a plantation near Delhi, La.
His father, William Fuller, was killed in the first year of the War. Probably his mother's
maiden name was Sanford as it was so often the custom those days to give the mother's
former name to a son. This is only conjecture. His mother then married a Confederate
officer by the name of McCurdy and had a girl child by him named Dora. The mother died of measles in the last year of the war and was without family so the neighbors kept the children. McCurdy had lost an arm and had other serious injuries in this last year of the War. No longer able to fight he returned to the plantation at Delhi to find a sad state of affairs. Papa was then about seven years and Dora almost an infant. To take the children to his relatives, the father rode by night with Papa behind him and the girl child held in front with his one good arm. People hid them by day as McCurdy had refused to take the oath of allegiance and no doubt would have been caught by the Federal soldiers and held as a prisoner of war. He finally reached the relatives in Arkansas and very soon died of his wounds. These relatives, also named McCurdy, in those hard days after the war, probably resented having another mouth to feed that was not of their own blood.
