Re: Company I 4th MO Cavalry CSA

Guys I'm stretching things a bit and it requires some further detective work involving the between the war period in the west.

There appears in the 1860 census a John Uhlman age 31 from Ireland in of all places the US Army, on the census taken at Camp on Red River, San Miquel County, New Mexico. He is a private. This 8 page census is essentially a list of the military personnel there and includes such folk as Charles Ruff future brevet general from MO, Capt Andrew Porter to become Gen Porter of Peninsular Campaign fame. Uhlman appears to be associated with Capt John Walker future leader of Co G 1st Arkansas Cav at Wilson's creek. Another Confederate connection is HC McNeel who went on to be a Lt Col under Sibley and fought at Glorietta. Suffice to say a bunch of these guys in camp in July 1860 went separate ways when 1861 came along some Union and some CSA. Ofcourse many of the posts were abandoned by the Union but it appears this may be as close an Arkansas connection I can find.
