"The Federals plainly stated that if anyone refused the offer, they would be hunted down like animals and killed". Exactly my take on why Devil Dick Boze of Oregon County was killed in front of his wife and children in June 1865 by a patrol of 7th Ks. Cav. troopers. If local oral history is correct, he had stated he would not surrender and take the oath.
