FWIW. I'm just throwing this out there hoping it will help someone. I have these records downloaded if anyone wishes copies.

The comments about Callaway County in the Civil War tweaked a memory from some fairly recent research. While trying to learn a little more about Boone's Mounted Infantry I found Captain John G. Provines. Capt. Provines' Compiled Service Record includes a cover and two cards. One card tells of his capture at Fulton on Dec. 25, 1861 and the other tells of him being sent to Vicksburg for exchange on Sept. 1, 1862. The 1860 Callaway County federal census confirms a John G. Provines is living in a Hotel in Fulton and is a practicing attorney. I was somewhat curious about this young attorney from the north side of the river joining up with Boone and his men south of the river. I have not pursued this other than I found a John G. Provines in Randolph County who was a newspaper editor in 1880. Other possible records were some confederate civilian papers where a John G. Provines drove a herd of 180 head of cattle from Egypt to Meridian Mississippi.
