Bruce, thank you for all the information. I'm still trying to access Missouri's Union Provost Marshal Papers 1861-1866 on Missouri Digital Heritage (a lot to read through but terribly interesting and sad). Specifically an affidavid of Sherman Zumwalt's dated 8-6-1862 that a group of men (which he then names) were to join guerrilla bands under Cobb and Porter. The Zumwalt family is actually part of our Rice family tree, which in restrospect is even sadder. Two of the men he names (Thomas Conner and Peter Rice) are my direct family and I'll be like a dog with a bone until I find the history of this. Thomas Conner supposedly was a prisoner and died of disease; and Peter Rice was my gggrandfather who disappears after the 1860 Callaway Co, MO census - we strongly believe he must have been in the Civil War also but as yet have not found definite proof.
