It is my opinion that Joseph Gibson Vaughan and Daniel Vaughn were two different people. Daniel Vaugn was 19 years old at the time of the 1860 Missouri census. This would make his birth about 1841. I have a Joe Vaughn listed who claimed to be Frank James and died in Newton County, Arkansas on Feb. 26, 1925. I also have a Joseph Vaughn who was born August 5, 1839 in Sni-a-bar Township, Jackson County, MO and was killed in 1862 at Pea Ridge, Arkansas. On the original roster of Quantrill's men were two Vaughns: James A. and William H. Vaughn. James A. was hung during the Civil War. William survived the war but nothing is known about him after the war. I do not have a Joseph Gibson Vaughan nor does Eiken & Hale or Joseph Houts, Jr. There are a lot of men who rode with Quantrill that is not listed.

Sources: Daniel Vaughn--1860 Missouri Census

Joe Vaughn--Eiken & Hale, Branded As Rebels 443; Sarah Snow, Lester Snow, Columbus Vaughn, "This Was Frank James, Part II," Joe Vaughn, "The Only True Story of the Life of Frank James," 160, 174.

Joseph Vaughn--Eiken & Hale, 443.

James A. & William H. Vaughn--Eiken & Hale 443; Joseph K. Houts, Jr., "Quantrill's Thieves," 204-205.
