Graves County was very pro-South / Democratic before during and for as long as the Confederate veterans still lived. It took the Republican Army and military troops arresting the Democrats that were in office, and hauling them off to prison, for the Yankees to first get Unionists into public office in the local state election of 1862. After the war Mayfield did have a GAR post for the Yankee veterans, but it was not nearly as large, powerful and well known as the UCV camp. For those people in the Jackson Purchase with a Yankee in the wood pile, most still are ashamed to admit it. And why not; their values are totally at odds with the founding values of the Declaration of Independence. Remember, the Jackson Purchase gave the state of Kentucky its only secessionist in the US Congress in the 1861 Federal election. The rest of the state was old Henry Clay Whigs and their afterbirth, which begot the Republican Party.
