My point exactly. Your statement "unsourced to me I was unsure of it" haunts researchers.

When titles pop up, genealogist go nuts trying to find why a title exists. Most are relieved to find that previous researchers had an answer such as "He began using that title in _ era" .. and since they know that many Kentuckians carry the moniker Colonel without merit.

In my preparing my 200-page Name Index, which entails look-ups in the 1860 census, I've seen kids named: Major, General, Sergeant, Colonel, and Doctor -- Major being the most common.
