title of Colonel or General, most home guards
In Response To: Re: Capture of Wm Penn Adair ()

Robert Negelein,

The mysterious titles of Colonel or General have haunted genealogists. ..Many assumed that these conceited characters assigned a title to themselves. Since I've done extensive family histories, men with unexplained surface from time to time.
.
e.g., "He started using 'General' between 1850-1855" was repeatedly published. ..General Charles Graham (1792-1875) of Cass County TX was my direct ancestor.

Most of these titles were earned by being elected by their local home guard. ..Some were appointed positions, e.g. James Bourland was appointed Brig-General by the Texas governor, then he declined when he was re-appointed in 1862. That's when the Texas Legislature decided that each district should elect their own officers.
.
By the way, below is my home page for my direct ancestors, and the families I have studied. ..I have complete family sheets for every marriage shown. ..Some day I hope to have all entered on my web site. Thus far, I add new info when asked.
