I have read that getting these small pensions was not that hard. The states ran these pension systems and I imagine that by 1910 the children and grandchildren of these aging vets really supported provisions being made for them to have at least a little dignity in the old age. Probably the politicians in office were the children or grandchildren of CSA vets. Funny thing is that two of my relatives died in VA hospitals in Atlanta, but CSA vets were not considered vets by the USA. I have also read that the main government expense in Mississippi after the war was the providing of artificial limbs for CSA vets. The USA was not lifting a finger to help the former rebels.
