I guess James Flanigan got the pension as an indigent or disabled confederate veteran? I don't think he was indigent since he had a shoemaker's shop. He is listed as disabled in 1880 and living with his mother and brother, William, who was also a confederate veteran. As I understand it these old confederates got the pension for either being indigent or disabled? Was there any other reason they could collect the pension from Georgia? I believe the pension was $60 a month in 1910. He lived to be 87 and died in 1930. His in-law Archer Avary was a confederate and lived until 1937. Imagine the things he saw during his life time? Cars, airplanes, radio, telephones etc. None of this existed when he was born in 1846.
