No need to apologize. A few years ago I started looking at original Confederate Battle flags both in books and in person and I noticed that the middle star sometimes pointed up and sometimes down. So I kept an unofficial running score on all CBF's I viewed for awhile, at the time the count seemed to run about 50/50. Then I started focusing on CBF's that had no markings on them, as to make a person say this flag is flown a certain "Way". If I didn't see a clue from the hoist or a sleeve that would only let the flag fit on the staff just one way. I was coming to a conclusion that these flags could have started out being flown either way, but after someone lettered an honor, date or unit id on the war time flag, that probably locked in, that the flag would always be flown as to read the text. Now years later a museum gets a flag with no markings (probably a rare occurrence) but with no clues on the hoist like stretched out raw eyelets holes and I'm not talking brass ones, from the weight of the flag pulling on them or any other viable clue as to how the flag was flown. Their stenciling of a catalog or id# it might have a 50/50 chance of being correct. I'm sure a good flag guy could improve the number. What through me off and made me think I was getting what I call the "shop shuffle" or the run around was when the talk started about the star being tilted to the left or right slightly or flag orientation. When you can look at the middle star and basically see one point is either pointing up or down. My flag stories were just a simple way of trying to give a clear example of what I was asking, well and maybe a little humor, because I didn't think you understood what I information I wanted.
