Re: Confederate Battle Flag

I'm not saying the middle star sets the orientation of a CBF. I've looked at a large number of original CBF flags and star up-star down (sarcasm) runs about 50/50. What I'm saying and was asking is, lets take a simple CBF and its maker ( don't care what depot, issue, bunting or silk, nothing along this line, get it (sarcasm again). This original Confederate Battle Flag maker finishes his flag (very important here) and it has not one mark, no text, no honors or no unit id, no nothing. He hands it to a color bearer of the unit it was made for, he just happen to be waiting around for their flag. he carries it back to his unit and his Captain says "Lets see how it looks tie it on the staff". I think he has to make a decision which end of the hoist is he going to tie at the top. Oh lord look the middle star is pointing down at 10 degrees off plumb (flag boy humor), but he doesn't care, he carries the flag proudly as is. Lets say it was a mediocre unit with no battle honors, no nothing. in 1863 the flag is placed in a wagon train and is way behind the advancing army. A union cavalry brigade captures the wagon train, a trooper comes on the flag takes it from its staff and stuffs it inside his shell jacket. He decides not to turn it in and sends it to his family in Ohio. Many years pass his descendants decide it needs to go a museum so they box it up and send it to the Rebel Yell Museum in Possum Waller, Arkansas. It arrives and the fine staff at said museum pulls it from the box, it has not one mark on it, so they catalog it and text it with their reference #BR549 and hang it on the wall. They finally think maybe we should take a picture of it for security. They take a picture of it with a hologram of museum property in the background of the picture. Oh no, it can't be! looking at the Flag on their website the middle star is pointing up 10 degrees off plumb. One or two thefts later the flag end up at the auction house of Dewey, Cheatham & Howe and you flag guys try to figure out if it's authentic, when and where the heck it came from. Please don't come back and say that a plain CBF flag wasn't ever carried upside down as to the maker's orientation or a museum catalog numbers, captured flag numbers or Honors might not have been placed on the flag different as to the first time it was flown, It would break my "flag loving heart".
