Al,

The other good historians here have already weighed in with their concerns and all of them are my concerns as well. While brass grommets existed during the Civil War I know of no CS unit flag that ever had them at that time. Methods of attachment including whipped eyelets or pole sleeves and sometimes the hoist edge was nailed to the staff - but never grommets.

Tom has indicated the cloth looked wrong and I concur. I don't like the sewing either. Stars on both sides do not bother me as the ANV Richmond Depot flags had that as did the Augusta Depot flags. The Mobile Depot flags had cutaway stars.

This flag resembles one or two of the 10th Virginia Infantry (I think I have the ID right). Both of them also lack fimbration indicating a homemade pattern most likely. It is possible this flag was made to resemble one of those flags.

Based on what the pictures show I do not believe this flag to be authentic to the Civil War period. It might even be 20th Century but, as Tom suggested, getting it tested by a noted textiles expert is the way to find out conclusively.
